Yuno Terms of Service

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are an agreement between you and Minato Kaneko (“Yuno,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) concerning your use of the Yuno mobile application and related services (together, the “App”).

By installing or using the App, you agree to these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the App.

1. Who Can Use Yuno

You must be at least 13 years old to use the App.

If you are located in the European Economic Area or United Kingdom, you must be at least 16 years old unless the applicable law in your country permits a lower age for consent to information-society services.

If you are under 18, you confirm that a parent or legal guardian has reviewed and agreed to these Terms on your behalf where required.

You must also be legally capable of entering into a binding agreement under applicable law.

2. What Yuno Is

Yuno is a self-study language-learning tool designed to help users recognize and read Japanese characters.

The App currently provides hiragana and katakana learning and practice, kanji and vocabulary learning, reading practice, an app blocker on iPhone, optional reminders, and home-screen and lock-screen widgets. Some of these features require a Yuno Plus subscription.

Widgets and reminders show learning content on your device, and on your lock screen if you choose. Anyone who can see your screen may see that content. You control whether widgets and reminders are turned on.

The app blocker

On iPhone, Yuno can lock apps you choose until you complete a short Japanese quiz. It uses Apple’s Screen Time framework, which you allow in your device’s settings. You choose which apps to lock, when they are locked, and how long a quiz unlocks them, and you can turn the blocker off or withdraw Screen Time access at any time.

The app blocker is a self-control tool for your own device. It is not a parental-control, security, or monitoring service. Locking and unlocking depend on iOS and Screen Time, so an app may sometimes stay locked or unlocked longer or shorter than you set, for example after an iOS update, a restart, or a change to your Screen Time settings. Do not lock apps you may need urgently, such as apps for emergencies, health, safety, navigation, or work. You are responsible for the apps you choose to lock, and we are not responsible for messages, calls, notifications, or anything else you miss while an app is locked.

Yuno is a learning aid. It is not a school, accredited educational institution, language certification service, or substitute for formal instruction.

We do not guarantee that the App will:

• Make you fluent in Japanese;
• Prepare you for a particular examination;
• Produce a particular learning outcome;
• Improve your proficiency by a particular amount; or
• Always contain completely accurate or comprehensive readings, romanizations, translations, example words, or other educational content.

Educational content may be simplified for learners and may not represent every possible Japanese reading, pronunciation, meaning, or usage.

3. Accounts

Yuno automatically creates an anonymous guest account when you first use the App.

You may optionally create or connect an account using:

• Email and password;
• Google Sign-In; or
• Sign in with Apple.

Signing in is not currently required to use the App.

You are responsible for keeping your account credentials secure and for activity occurring through your account.

You agree to provide accurate information when creating an account and not to impersonate another person.

One account is intended for one person. You may not sell, transfer, or share your account.

We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms or are used in a manner that could harm Yuno, other users, or our services.

4. Learning Progress and Data Loss

Your learning progress is stored locally on your device.

Your progress is not currently uploaded to your Yuno account, synchronized between devices, or backed up by Yuno.

This means that deleting the App, resetting your device, changing devices, or otherwise removing the App’s local data may permanently erase your learning progress.

We cannot restore locally stored progress that has been lost.

You are responsible for maintaining your device and any local data stored on it.

5. Price and Yuno Plus Subscriptions

The core hiragana and katakana learning features and the app blocker are available free of charge.

Yuno Plus is an optional paid subscription. It unlocks additional content and options, such as more kanji and word decks, additional widget looks and quiz backgrounds, and more choices for the app blocker’s quizzes. What Plus includes is described in the App at the time you subscribe, and it may change as described in Section 9.

Purchases through the App Store and Google Play

Yuno Plus is sold as an auto-renewable subscription through the Apple App Store and, where available, Google Play (each a “Store”), with monthly or yearly plans where offered. The price, billing period, and any free trial or introductory offer are shown in the App and on the Store’s purchase screen before you confirm. Payment is charged to your Apple ID or Google Play account when you confirm the purchase, or at the end of a free trial if you started one.

Automatic renewal

Your subscription renews automatically at the same price and for the same period unless you cancel it at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your account is charged for the renewal within 24 hours before the current period ends. If the price of your plan changes, the Store will notify you as its policies require, and you can cancel before the new price takes effect.

Free trials and introductory offers

If an introductory price is offered (for example, a reduced price for your first month), your subscription continues at the regular price at the end of the introductory period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before that period ends. Introductory-offer eligibility is set by the Store’s rules.

If a free trial is offered, it becomes a paid subscription at the end of the trial unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends. Free-trial eligibility is set by the Store’s rules and is generally limited to one per eligible account. If you buy a subscription during a free trial, any unused part of the trial is forfeited where the Store’s rules provide.

Cancelling and managing

You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time in your Apple ID subscription settings or in the Google Play Store under Payments & subscriptions. If you cancel, you keep access to Yuno Plus until the end of the current paid period, and it will not renew. Deleting the App or your Yuno account does not cancel your subscription.

Refunds

Refunds are handled by the Store you purchased through, under its refund policies. For App Store purchases, you can request a refund from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com; we cannot issue App Store refunds directly. For Google Play purchases, you can request a refund through Google Play, and you may also contact us at kanajapsupport@gmail.com.

Restoring purchases

Yuno Plus is linked to your Yuno account and the Store account you purchased with. If you reinstall the App or change devices, use Restore Purchases in the App to restore an active subscription. If you used Yuno as a guest, signing in before you change devices makes restoring easier.

We use RevenueCat to process and verify subscription status.

6. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

• Reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or attempt to derive the source code of the App except where applicable law expressly permits it;
• Copy, reproduce, scrape, or systematically extract the App’s curriculum, character data, word lists, or other proprietary content except where permitted by law;
• Circumvent technical restrictions, access controls, or paid-feature restrictions;
• Interfere with the App, Firebase Authentication, or other services used by Yuno;
• Use automated systems to abuse or overload the App or authentication services;
• Attempt to access another user’s account;
• Impersonate another person;
• Use the App in violation of applicable law; or
• Use the App in a way that materially harms Yuno or other users.

7. Intellectual Property

The App and its original components, including its software, design, interface, curriculum, lesson structure, character ordering, original word lists, illustrations, sounds, trademarks, and other original content, are owned by Yuno or its licensors and are protected by applicable intellectual-property laws.

Japanese characters themselves are not owned by Yuno. This section concerns Yuno’s original selection, arrangement, presentation, educational materials, and other protectable components.

Subject to these Terms, we grant you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable, revocable license to install and use the App on devices that you own or control for your personal, non-commercial language-learning purposes.

No other rights are granted.

If Yuno uses third-party data, dictionaries, word lists, fonts, illustrations, sounds, or other materials under a third-party license, those materials remain subject to their applicable license terms.

8. Third-Party Services

Yuno relies on third-party services, including Firebase Authentication and App Check, Google Sign-In, Sign in with Apple, Apple’s Screen Time framework, the Apple App Store, Google Play, RevenueCat, Expo, and PostHog.

Those services are operated independently by their respective providers and may be subject to separate terms and privacy policies.

We are not responsible for the availability or operation of third-party services.

9. Availability and Changes to the App

We may add, modify, suspend, or remove features, characters, lessons, modes, curriculum, or other parts of the App at any time.

We may temporarily suspend the App for maintenance, security reasons, technical problems, or problems involving third-party providers.

We do not guarantee that Yuno will always be available or uninterrupted.

We may discontinue the App entirely.

10. Termination

You may stop using Yuno at any time.

You may delete your account through the in-App account deletion feature:

Settings → Account → Delete Account

You may also delete the App from your device.

Deleting your account or the App does not cancel a Yuno Plus subscription. Cancel it in your Apple ID or Google Play subscription settings to stop future charges.

We may suspend or terminate your account or access to Yuno if:

• You materially breach these Terms;
• Your use creates a security or legal risk;
• We are required to do so by law; or
• We discontinue the App.

Upon termination, your license to use the App ends.

Sections concerning intellectual property, disclaimers, limitations of liability, indemnification, governing law, and other provisions that by their nature should survive termination will continue to apply.

11. Disclaimers

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE APP IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE.”

WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE APP WILL:

• MEET YOUR PARTICULAR REQUIREMENTS;
• BE AVAILABLE AT ALL TIMES;
• BE ERROR-FREE;
• BE COMPLETELY SECURE;
• CONTAIN COMPLETELY ACCURATE EDUCATIONAL CONTENT;
• LOCK OR UNLOCK APPS EXACTLY WHEN YOU EXPECT; OR
• PRESERVE YOUR LOCAL LEARNING PROGRESS.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits any warranty, right, or remedy that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited under applicable law.

12. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, YUNO AND ITS OWNER, EMPLOYEES, CONTRACTORS, LICENSORS, AND SERVICE PROVIDERS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO YOUR USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE APP.

This includes, where permitted by law, loss of data, loss of profits, loss of goodwill, or other intangible losses.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability for all claims arising out of or relating to the App will not exceed the greater of:

1. The amount you paid to Yuno for the App during the twelve months preceding the event giving rise to the claim; or
2. US $50.

Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot legally be limited, including liability for fraud or other liability that applicable law prohibits us from excluding or limiting.

13. Indemnification

To the extent permitted by applicable law, you agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Yuno and its owner, employees, contractors, licensors, and service providers from claims, damages, liabilities, costs, and reasonable expenses, including reasonable legal fees, arising from:

• Your material breach of these Terms;
• Your unlawful use of the App; or
• Your violation of another person’s rights.

This section does not require you to indemnify Yuno for matters caused by Yuno’s own unlawful conduct.

14. App Store Terms

Apple

If you obtained Yuno through Apple’s App Store, the following additional terms apply.

These Terms are between you and Yuno, and not Apple.

Apple has no obligation to furnish maintenance or support services for Yuno.

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Apple has no obligation regarding warranties for Yuno. If Yuno fails to conform to an applicable warranty that cannot be disclaimed, you may notify Apple, and Apple may refund any applicable purchase price under its applicable policies. Apple has no other warranty obligation with respect to Yuno to the maximum extent permitted by law.

Yuno, and not Apple, is responsible for addressing claims relating to Yuno, including product-liability claims, claims that Yuno fails to comply with applicable legal or regulatory requirements, consumer-protection claims, and intellectual-property claims.

Apple is a third-party beneficiary of these Terms and may enforce these Terms against you as a third-party beneficiary.

Your use of Yuno must also comply with the applicable App Store terms.

Google Play

If you obtain Yuno through Google Play, your use of the App is also subject to Google’s applicable Google Play terms.

To the extent required by Google’s terms, Google is not responsible for Yuno’s content, maintenance, support, or claims relating to Yuno.

15. Governing Law and Disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules.

Subject to applicable consumer-protection laws and mandatory rights that cannot be waived, any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or the App shall be brought in the state or federal courts located in California.

Before bringing a formal dispute, we encourage you to contact us at kanajapsupport@gmail.com so that we can attempt to resolve the issue informally.

Nothing in this section prevents a consumer from exercising rights or bringing claims in a jurisdiction where applicable law gives that consumer the right to do so.

16. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time.

When we make changes, we will update the effective date at the top of the Terms.

For material changes, we will provide reasonable notice where required by applicable law, including through the App or another appropriate method.

Your continued use of Yuno after the updated Terms become effective constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms to the extent permitted by law.

If you do not agree to an updated version, you should stop using Yuno.

17. General

These Terms and the Privacy Policy constitute the entire agreement between you and Yuno concerning your use of the App, except where additional terms are expressly provided for particular features.

If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in effect.

Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of our right to enforce it later.

You may not assign or transfer these Terms or your rights under them without our prior written consent.

We may assign these Terms as part of a merger, acquisition, reorganization, or sale of substantially all of our assets.
