Yuno Privacy Policy

Effective date: October 10, 2026

Yuno (“Yuno,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is operated by Minato Kaneko in the United States. This Privacy Policy explains what information Yuno collects, how it is used, and the choices available to you when you use the Yuno mobile application, including its home-screen and lock-screen widgets and its app blocker (the “App”).

In short: Yuno is designed to collect as little personal information as reasonably necessary. The App uses Firebase Authentication to create and manage accounts. A guest account is created automatically when you first use the App. If you choose to sign in, we receive information associated with the sign-in method you select. If you subscribe to Yuno Plus, your purchase is processed by Apple or Google and managed through RevenueCat. Your Japanese-learning progress is stored on your device. As a guest, it stays there; if you sign in, it is also backed up to your Yuno account so you can get it back on another device. If you use the app blocker, which apps you lock stays on your device: we never receive it, or how you use those apps. So that we can see where the App itself confuses people, it also sends anonymous recordings of its own screens as you use them, with everything you type blanked out before they leave your device.

Yuno does not use advertising, sell personal information, or use your information for advertising or cross-app tracking.

1. Who We Are

Yuno is operated by:

Minato Kaneko
United States

Email: kanajapsupport@gmail.com

For privacy questions, requests, or concerns, contact us at the email above.

2. Information We Collect

The information Yuno handles depends on how you use the App.

A. Guest accounts

When you first launch Yuno, the App automatically creates an anonymous Firebase Authentication account for you.

This account is created automatically and is assigned a randomly generated user ID. You do not need to provide your name, email address, or password to use Yuno as a guest.

The anonymous account allows Yuno to maintain an authentication identity for your App session and account-related functionality.

B. Email and password sign-in

If you choose to create an account using email and password, Yuno receives and stores your email address through Firebase Authentication.

Your password is handled by Firebase. Yuno does not receive or have access to your password in readable form. Firebase uses appropriate password-protection mechanisms, including hashing.

Password-reset emails are handled through Firebase’s authentication services.

C. Google Sign-In

If you choose to sign in with Google, Firebase may provide Yuno with information associated with your Google account, including:

  • Google account identifier;
  • Email address;
  • Name;
  • Profile photo, if provided by Google.

We use this information only for authentication and account-related functionality.

D. Sign in with Apple

If you choose to sign in with Apple, Firebase may provide Yuno with information associated with your Apple account, including:

  • Apple user identifier;
  • Email address, if provided;
  • Your name when Apple provides it.

Apple may provide a private relay email address instead of your actual email address if you choose to hide your email address.

Your name may only be provided by Apple during your first sign-in, depending on Apple’s sign-in behavior and your account settings.

We use this information only for authentication and account-related functionality.

E. Yuno Plus purchases and subscriptions

If you start a free trial or introductory offer, or subscribe to Yuno Plus, the purchase is made through your Apple App Store account or, where available, your Google Play account. Apple or Google processes your payment. We do not receive your payment-card details.

Yuno uses RevenueCat, Inc. to manage subscriptions. To connect your subscription to your Yuno account, the App sends RevenueCat your Yuno account’s user ID. RevenueCat, Apple, and Google then provide us with information about your purchases, which may include:

  • The product or plan you purchased (for example, monthly or yearly);
  • Purchase, trial, renewal, cancellation, and expiration dates;
  • Transaction identifiers and receipt or purchase-token information from Apple or Google;
  • Whether your subscription is currently active;
  • Your country or storefront and currency;
  • Device and app-version information needed to process and restore purchases.

We use this information only to provide Yuno Plus, verify and restore purchases, and handle billing questions and refunds.

F. Feedback and support requests

If you send feedback from the App, the App opens a pre-filled message in your device’s email app, addressed to our support address. Nothing is sent unless you send that email yourself. When you do, we receive your email address, your message, and anything else you choose to include. You may also contact us directly by email.

We use this information only to read and respond to your feedback and to improve the App.

3. Your Learning Progress

Yuno’s learning progress is stored on your device. If you sign in, part of it is also backed up to your Yuno account (see “Progress backup” below).

Depending on the features you use, local information may include:

  • Hiragana and katakana learning progress;
  • Kanji progress;
  • Characters and words you have learned;
  • Accuracy;
  • Response times;
  • Session history and streaks;
  • Onboarding and placement answers;
  • Widget settings, such as the look, name, and content you choose;
  • App blocker settings and quiz history, such as how many questions a quiz asks, how long a quiz unlocks your apps, when the blocker is on (always or on a schedule), what you are quizzed on, and the characters you answered;
  • Your collection of the characters you have learned;
  • Reminder settings, such as whether reminders are on and the hour you choose;
  • Other local learning state used to operate the App.

Progress backup

If you use the App as a guest, none of this information is uploaded to our servers.

If you sign in, the App backs up your learning progress to your Yuno account using Google Cloud Firestore, a Firebase service, so it can be restored when you sign in again, including on another device. The backup contains your hiragana, katakana, and kanji progress (including accuracy, response times, and the characters you have learned), your collection, your streak, your onboarding and placement answers, and the name you gave your widget. It is stored under your Firebase user ID, and only your signed-in account can read or change it. Progress you made as a guest is added to the backup when you sign in.

Widget settings other than the name, app blocker settings and quiz history, and reminder settings are never backed up and stay on your device.

When you sign out, the App backs up your progress and then removes it from the device. Signing in again restores it.

Progress that has not been backed up (for example, progress made as a guest) may be permanently lost if you delete the App, reset or erase your device, change devices, or otherwise remove the App’s local data. We cannot restore progress that was never backed up.

Widgets

Yuno’s home-screen and lock-screen widgets show characters, words, and progress based on the learning data stored on your device. The App shares this data with the widget on your device. It is not sent to our servers.

Anything a widget displays can be seen by anyone who can see your screen, including on your lock screen. If you do not want this, remove the widget or change it in your device settings.

Reminders

If you turn on reminders, Yuno schedules them as local notifications on your device, at the hour you choose. Reminders do not use push notifications. We do not receive a push-notification token, and your reminder settings are not sent to our servers. You can turn reminders off in the App or in your device’s notification settings at any time.

App blocker on iPhone (Screen Time)

If you use Yuno’s app blocker on iPhone, Yuno uses Apple’s Screen Time framework (Family Controls) to lock the apps you choose until you complete a short quiz. You choose the apps in Apple’s own app picker. iOS gives Yuno only an opaque token for your selection: Yuno cannot see which apps you chose, cannot see what you do inside any app, and cannot read your Screen Time usage. The token stays on your device.

The lock screen, the notification that opens a quiz, and the timer that locks your apps again all run on your device. Your blocker settings and quiz history are stored on your device like the rest of your learning progress, and are not sent to our servers. You can turn the blocker off in the App at any time, and you can withdraw Screen Time access in your device’s settings.

We use Screen Time only to lock and unlock the apps you choose. We do not use it, or anything it gives the App, for advertising, for analytics about how you use other apps, or for any other purpose, and we do not share it with anyone.

App blocker on Android (usage access)

If you use Yuno’s app blocker on Android, you choose the apps to lock from a list of the apps installed on your device. Yuno saves the package names of the apps you choose on your device. To notice when one of them opens, Yuno asks for Usage access, which lets it check which app is in front, and for “Display over other apps,” which lets it bring up the quiz. While the blocker is on, a foreground service shows a notification and checks the app in front; when it is one you locked, Yuno opens a short quiz.

Yuno uses Usage access only for this check. It does not record, keep, or send a history of the apps you use or how long you use them. The apps you choose, your blocker settings, and your quiz history stay on your device and are not sent to our servers or to analytics. We do not use any of this for advertising or share it with anyone. You can turn the blocker off in the App at any time, and you can withdraw Usage access and “Display over other apps” in your device’s settings.

4. Information We Do Not Collect

Yuno currently does not intentionally collect or use:

  • Location information;
  • Contacts;
  • Advertising identifiers;
  • Information for advertising;
  • Information for cross-app or cross-site tracking;
  • Crash-reporting data;
  • Advertising data;
  • Your learning progress on our servers, unless you sign in (see Section 3);
  • Which apps you lock with the app blocker, or how you use them (on Android, the apps you choose are stored only on your device);
  • Push-notification tokens;
  • Payment or credit-card information.

Yuno currently does not contain advertisements.

If our practices change, we will update this Privacy Policy and applicable App Store and Google Play privacy disclosures.

5. Technical Information Processed by Service Providers

Apart from the anonymous usage analytics described below, Yuno does not intentionally collect analytics or tracking information. Our service providers may still automatically process certain technical information while providing their services to the App.

Usage analytics (PostHog)

Yuno uses PostHog, a product-analytics service provided by PostHog, Inc., to understand how the App is used so that we can improve it: for example, which steps of the first-run setup people complete, whether the widget is added to the home screen, whether the app blocker is set up and used, and whether the Yuno Plus screen is viewed.

This information is anonymous. The App assigns a random analytics identifier that is stored on your device and is not connected to your Yuno account, your Firebase user ID, your email address, or your name. The events we record are limited to the App being opened, the setup steps you see, the widget being added or offered, the Yuno Plus screen being shown, and, for the app blocker, whether Screen Time access was given, the quiz settings you choose (how many questions, how many minutes, whether quizzes teach new characters, and whether the blocker runs on a schedule), the blocker being switched on, off, or paused, and a quiz being started, finished, or left, along with whether it was opened from the block screen, the App, or setup. These events never include which apps you lock. PostHog also receives technical information with each event, such as your App version, device model, operating-system version, language, and screen size, and derives an approximate location (country or region) from your IP address. We do not record what you type, your learning progress, or your answers.

We do not use PostHog for advertising or cross-app tracking, and we do not share this information with anyone other than PostHog, which processes it on our behalf.

Session replay

Yuno also uses PostHog's session replay. A replay is a series of screenshots of the App's own screens, taken roughly once a second while the App is open, together with where on the screen you tap. Watching one back shows us where the App is confusing or broken in a way that counting events cannot. Replays carry the same random, anonymous analytics identifier as the events above, and are never attached to your account, your email address, or your name.

A replay never contains:

  • Anything you type. Every text field in the App — a password, the answer box in a blocker quiz, the feedback form, the name you give a widget — is covered by a blank block before the screenshot leaves your device.
  • Your email address. It is covered in the same way where the Account screen shows it.
  • Anything outside Yuno. Recording stops when you leave the App. It cannot see another app, your home screen, your notifications, or which apps you have locked.
  • Your network traffic or the App's diagnostic logs. PostHog's session replay is able to collect both; we have switched both off, because either could carry an identifier that would tie a recording to your account.
  • Any screen where a password is typed. Recording stops completely while the sign-in screen is open, and while the password box in the delete-account confirmation is on screen, and starts again when you leave. Tap positions are not recorded during those screens either.

Our website at kana-app-beryl.vercel.app uses PostHog in the same way: to count visits and taps on the download button, with no cookies and no recording of your browsing. Where a link to the website or the App Store carries a campaign tag, it tells us which post or profile you arrived from, not who you are.

Firebase Authentication and Firebase App Check

When you use Firebase Authentication, Firebase and Google’s infrastructure may process information such as:

  • IP address;
  • Device or browser information;
  • Authentication and security logs;
  • Information necessary to operate, secure, and troubleshoot Firebase Authentication.

Yuno also uses Firebase App Check to help confirm that requests to our Firebase services come from a genuine copy of the App, which protects against abuse. On iOS, App Check uses Apple’s App Attest service. App Check processes device-attestation information for security purposes only. It is not used for advertising or tracking.

This information is processed by Google/Firebase under Google’s applicable privacy terms and policies. For more information, please review Google’s privacy policy.

App updates (Expo)

Yuno may download updates to its content and code through Expo’s update service (EAS Update), provided by 650 Industries, Inc. (“Expo”). When the App checks for an update, Expo may process technical information such as your IP address, the App version, platform, and device type. This information is used to deliver the correct update.

RevenueCat

When the App loads subscription options or checks your subscription status, RevenueCat may process technical information such as your IP address, device and operating-system information, App version, and the purchase information described in Section 2.E.

6. How We Use Information

We use the information described in this Privacy Policy only for purposes related to operating Yuno, including:

  • Creating and maintaining user accounts;
  • Authenticating users;
  • Recovering accounts;
  • Providing sign-in functionality;
  • Maintaining the security of authentication services and protecting the App from abuse;
  • Providing Yuno Plus, including verifying, restoring, and managing subscriptions;
  • Delivering App updates;
  • Understanding, in aggregate and anonymously, how the App and website are used, so that we can improve them;
  • Responding to feedback and support requests; and
  • Complying with applicable legal obligations.

We do not use your account information to serve advertisements or to sell personal information.

7. How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal information.

We do not share personal information with third parties for their own advertising purposes or for cross-app tracking.

Yuno relies on third-party services to provide certain functionality:

Google Firebase

Yuno uses Firebase Authentication and Firebase App Check, services provided by Google, to create and authenticate accounts and to protect our services from abuse. If you sign in, Yuno also uses Cloud Firestore, a Firebase service, to store the backup of your learning progress.

Google may process information on our behalf as necessary to provide these services.

RevenueCat

Yuno uses RevenueCat to manage Yuno Plus subscriptions. RevenueCat receives your Yuno account’s user ID and your purchase information as described in Section 2.E, and processes it on our behalf.

Expo

Yuno uses Expo’s update service to deliver App updates. Expo processes technical information as described in Section 5.

PostHog

Yuno uses PostHog to process the anonymous usage analytics described in Section 5, on our behalf.

Google

If you choose Google Sign-In, Google processes information associated with your Google account in connection with authentication.

Apple

If you choose Sign in with Apple, Apple processes information associated with your Apple account in connection with authentication.

Apple App Store and Google Play

If you download Yuno through an app store, Apple or Google may independently process information associated with your use of their services. Their own privacy policies and terms apply to those activities.

Yuno Plus is purchased through the Apple App Store or, where available, Google Play. Apple or Google processes your payment. We do not receive your payment-card information from Apple or Google when you make purchases through their platforms.

8. International Data Transfers

Yuno is operated from the United States. Firebase and other service providers may process information in the United States and other countries where they or their service providers operate.

For users in the European Economic Area or United Kingdom, personal information may therefore be transferred outside your country or region.

Where required by applicable law, Google may rely on appropriate transfer mechanisms, including Standard Contractual Clauses, for international transfers.

9. Legal Bases for EEA and UK Users

If you are located in the European Economic Area or United Kingdom, we process personal information on the following legal bases where applicable:

Contract: We process information necessary to provide account creation and sign-in functionality when you choose to create or use an account, and to provide Yuno Plus when you subscribe.

Legitimate interests: We may process limited information associated with automatically created guest accounts, authentication security, abuse prevention, App updates, anonymous usage analytics, and responding to feedback where necessary to operate, protect, maintain, and improve Yuno.

Legal obligation: We may retain purchase and transaction records where required for tax, accounting, or other legal purposes.

Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw your consent at any time. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing that occurred before withdrawal.

10. Data Retention

We retain account information for as long as your account remains active or as necessary to provide the authentication service.

You may request deletion of your account as described below.

Firebase may independently delete or purge certain inactive or anonymous accounts according to Google’s applicable policies and retention practices.

If you are signed in, we keep the backup of your learning progress for as long as your account exists. It is deleted when you delete your account. Progress kept only on your device is not retained by Yuno.

RevenueCat, Apple, and Google retain purchase and subscription records as needed to provide the subscription, handle refunds and disputes, and meet tax and accounting obligations.

PostHog holds the anonymous usage events and session replays on our behalf for the retention period configured in our PostHog project, after which they are deleted automatically.

We keep feedback and support emails for as long as needed to respond and to keep a reasonable record of the conversation.

We may retain information when reasonably necessary to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, enforce agreements, or protect our rights.

11. Deleting Your Account

You can delete your Yuno account from within the App.

Go to:

Settings → Account → Delete Account

You will be asked to confirm the deletion before it is completed.

Deleting your account removes the account information associated with your Yuno authentication account, subject to information that we or our service providers are legally required or permitted to retain.

Deleting your account also deletes the backup of your learning progress, and the App erases the learning progress stored on your device.

To remove all remaining Yuno data from your device, such as app blocker and reminder settings, delete the Yuno App from your device.

Deleting your account or the App does not cancel a Yuno Plus subscription. Subscriptions are billed by Apple or Google. To stop future charges, cancel in your Apple ID or Google Play subscription settings before you delete your account.

If you cannot access the App or cannot complete account deletion, contact us at kanajapsupport@gmail.com and we will provide assistance.

12. Your Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have privacy rights concerning your personal information.

These may include rights to:

  • Access personal information we hold about you;
  • Request correction of inaccurate information;
  • Request deletion of your information;
  • Request a copy or portability of certain information;
  • Object to or restrict certain processing;
  • Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent; and
  • Lodge a complaint with a relevant privacy or data-protection authority.

These rights may arise under laws including the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), UK GDPR, applicable U.S. state privacy laws including the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) where applicable, and Japan’s Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI).

To exercise a privacy right, contact us at:

kanajapsupport@gmail.com

We may need to verify your identity before completing certain requests.

If you are in the European Economic Area or United Kingdom, you may also have the right to complain to your local data-protection authority.

If you are in California, you may have additional rights under California privacy law where applicable. Yuno does not sell personal information or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.

13. California Privacy Information

Yuno is operated in California and may be subject to California privacy requirements depending on the nature and scale of the business.

Yuno does not sell personal information.

Yuno does not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.

The categories of information that Yuno may process include account identifiers and contact information that you voluntarily provide through authentication or feedback, purchase and subscription history if you subscribe to Yuno Plus, anonymous usage analytics and session replays as described in Section 5, and technical information automatically processed by our service providers for authentication, security, subscriptions, and App updates.

For privacy requests, contact:

kanajapsupport@gmail.com

14. Children’s Privacy

Yuno is not directed toward children under 13.

You must be at least 13 years old to use Yuno. In the European Economic Area and United Kingdom, you must be at least 16 years old unless the applicable law in your country allows a lower age for consent to information-society services.

If you are under 18, you confirm that a parent or legal guardian has reviewed and agreed to these terms on your behalf where required.

If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child below the applicable minimum age without appropriate authorization, we will take reasonable steps to delete that information.

Parents or guardians who believe a child has provided information to Yuno may contact us at kanajapsupport@gmail.com.

15. Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures designed to protect information handled through Yuno.

Firebase provides encryption for information transmitted between your device and its services. Passwords are handled by Firebase’s authentication infrastructure rather than being provided to Yuno in readable form.

However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.

16. Third-Party Services and Links

Yuno may rely on third-party services such as Firebase, Google Sign-In, Sign in with Apple, RevenueCat, Expo, PostHog, the Apple App Store, and Google Play.

Those services are governed by their own privacy policies and terms. We encourage you to review their policies before using their services.

17. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time.

When we make changes, we will update the effective date at the top of this Privacy Policy.

If we make a material change to how we collect, use, or share personal information, we will provide additional notice where required by applicable law, including through the App or another appropriate method.

Your continued use of Yuno after an updated Privacy Policy becomes effective means that you acknowledge the updated policy to the extent permitted by law.
